I've had the machine working fine for ages, but all of a sudden - without anything changing as far as I know - it now won't even ping a host (immediate response of "Ping request could not find host ", even for host names in the hosts file).

If you add a DNS resolver to /etc/resolv.conf and still can't do a host google.com then you need to check your local network configuration.
